With the expansion to 48 teams, FIFA completely redesigned the tournament structure. The result is a World Cup with more excitement, more matches, and — importantly for pools — more opportunities for upsets. Here we explain how each phase works.
Group Stage: 12 Groups of 4 Teams
The 48 qualified teams are divided into 12 groups of 4 teams each (groups A through L). Within each group, teams play each other in a round-robin format, so each nation plays 3 group matches. The points system is the classic one: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. At the end of the group stage, the top two from each group (24 teams total) advance automatically. The 12 third-place teams compete for the 8 remaining spots in the Round of 32: the 8 teams with the best points, goal difference, and other criteria advance.
Round of 32: The First Knockout Round
This is the big novelty of the 2026 format. The 32 qualifiers from the group stage — the 24 first and second-place teams plus the 8 best third-place teams — face each other in the Round of 32. Each match is a knockout: win or go home. The loser has no second chance. The bracket is designed to ensure teams from the same group don't face each other again in this round, and to keep each half of the bracket relatively balanced.
Quarters, Semis, and Final: The Road to the Title
From the Round of 16 onward (the second knockout round in this format), the tournament follows the classic single-elimination bracket: Round of 16 → Quarterfinals → Semifinals → Final. The third-place match is also part of the program. The Grand Final is played on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (New York), with a capacity of over 82,000 fans.
